Generations of computer
1st generation:- 1946-1959:-The first generation of electronic computer started with the use of Vaccum Tubes. ENIAC (electronical numerical integrator and calculator) designed by John Machlly and john Eckert, was the world first generation purpose digital computer. It was very huge machine occupying 15000 sq ft floor space consuming 140 kw of power the computer was programmed manually switching and plugging and unplugging cable.
Some examples of first-generation computers
- ENIAC(electronical numerical integrator and calculator) ()EDVAC (Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer (3.) UNIVAC (Universal Automatic Computer, (4.) IBM-701(International Business Machines(IBM) (5) IBM-650
2nd generation:-1959-1965:-second generation of electronic computer started with the replacement of vaccum tube With transistor in the late 1950. Transistor is smaller chipper and lesser heat and consumes lesser power then the vaccum tube. The usage of transistor improved the reliability and speed of computer. The most widely used second generation computer were IBM 1620, IBM 140 etc
Some computers of the second generation
(1).IBM 7094 (2) IBM 1620 (3) CDC(Control Data Corporation.) 1604 (4) CDC 3600 (5) UNIVAC1108 (6) Honeywell 400
3rd Generation:-1965-1970:-third generation computer was characterized IC (integrated circuit which combine hundred and thousand of transistor all a small silicon box these chips were interconnected a printed circuit board. these development again led to further decrease in size cost and power requirement and an increase in efficiency and reliability.
Some computers of the third generation
(1)IBM-360 series.(2)Honeywell-6000 series.(3)PDP Personal data processor(4) IBM 370/168.(5)TDC – 316 (6)PDP-8.(7)PDP-11.(8)ICL(International Computers Ltd., London)2900.(9)IBM 370.
4th Generation Computer:-1970-1990The fourth generation of computer saw a very large scale of integration of millions of components are a single chip resulting in advantage of speed cost, reliability and efficiency . in the 1980 a major revolution in the All high-level language like C, C++, Java, PHP are used in this generation. Some computers of the third generation
(1)DEC10.(2) STAR 1000. (3)PDP11.(4) CRAY-1(Supercomputer).(5)CRAY-X –MP (supercomputer).
5th Generation of Computer:-The period of the fifth generation is 1980-onwards. The VLSI technology develops into ULSI (ultra large scale integration) technology in the fifth generation. These are used in the production of microprocessor chips which have ten million electronic components.
The fifth-generation computers are based on parallel processing hardware and artificial intelligence software. The artificial intelligence is the trending branch of computer science which interprets the meaning and methods of making computers that behave like human beings. This generation is in the developmental stage.
All the high-level languages are used in the fifth generation of computer. The main aim of the fifth-generation is to make the devices which are capable of self-learning and self-organization. This generation of computer is completely based on artificial intelligence and parallel processing hardware, and artificial intelligence includes the various terms which are given below:
Robotics./Neural Networks./Game playing./Develop the expert system to decide a real-life situation./Natural language processing.
Various types of computers exist in this generation, which is given below:
Desktop./Laptop./Notebook./Ultra book./Chrome book.
