The Indian diaspora comprises over 18 million persons of Indian origin and 13 million non-resident Indians – making it the largest overseas community globally. The profile and geographical distribution of the Indian diaspora presents a great opportunity to promote the country’s soft power and cultural diplomacy abroad. This is the recommendation of a parliamentary panel to the government, suggesting that the potential of the diaspora community should be harnessed to serve as an effective tool in furthering India’s interest and influence globally. In its report presented in Parliament in August last year, the committee said there is need to prepare a clear and comprehensive policy framework to engage more proactively with the Indians living abroad. The government has now filed its action taken notes on the recommendations made in the standing committee report titled: Welfare of Indian diaspora: Policies & Schemes.Of the 55 recommendations made, the government has accepted 43. There are 8 recommendations on which the committee has asserted reiteration.
