1.Veteran Activist Tapan Bose Passes Away

On 30th January 2025, Tapan Bose, a prominent activist known for his commitment to peace and human rights, passed away at his residence in Delhi.

  • Tapan Bose, a lifelong activist, championed peace and dialogue in conflict zones, including Kashmir, Balochistan, and Naxal-affected areas.
  • He played a significant role in advocating for justice following the Godhra carnage and the Gujarat riots of 2002, as well as the Babri Masjid demolition.
  • Bose was a trusted ally of marginalized communities and his friendships spanned regions like Burma, Tamil Nadu in Sri Lanka, and the Naga areas.
  • As a prolific documentary filmmaker, Bose’s works shed light on pressing issues, including the Bhopal gas tragedy, Jharkhand, and the victims of the Bhagalpur blindings.

2.India Gate Illuminated for World NTDs Day

On 30th January 2025, on World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Day, India Gate shined in purple and orange to raise awareness about NTDs and emphasize the global effort to combat them.

  • The lighting of India Gate marks a global campaign to highlight the significance of tackling Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) worldwide.
  • The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare organized the event to showcase India’s progress in fighting NTDs, with particular attention to Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) and Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL).
  • Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) is a debilitating disease that threatens the lives of 404 million people in India, leading to painful body enlargement and severe disability.
  • Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL), also known as Kala-Azar, can cause malnutrition, severe weakness, and loss of working capacity, severely affecting affected communities.
  • India has made significant strides in reducing the incidence of these diseases through awareness programs, prevention, and treatment efforts.
  • The focus on these diseases serves to remind the world that NTDs are preventable and treatable, and there is a need for increased funding and resources.

3.Sunita Williams Breaks Spacewalking Record

On 31st January 2025, astronaut Sunita Williams set a new record for spacewalking time, surpassing the previous mark held by Peggy Whitson.

  • Sunita Williams broke the spacewalking record by surpassing Peggy Whitson’s total spacewalking time of 60 hours and 21 minutes, as confirmed by the International Space Station (ISS) on X.
  • The spacewalk was part of Expedition 72 and began at 8 a.m. EST, marking the 92nd US spacewalk.
  • Williams, wearing a suit with red stripes, was joined by fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore, who wore an unmarked suit, on his fifth spacewalk.
  • The spacewalk, expected to last six and a half hours, contributed to the ongoing mission of Expedition 72, which began on September 23, 2024.

4.Shubhanshu Shukla to Pilot Axiom Mission 4 to ISS

On 30th January 2025, US agency announced that Indian Air Force officer Shubhanshu Shukla will become the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS) aboard Axiom Mission 4.

  • Shubhanshu Shukla, an Indian Air Force officer, will serve as the pilot for Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), scheduled to launch in spring 2025.
  • This mission marks a historic milestone as Shukla becomes the first Indian astronaut to travel to the ISS on a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.
  • Shukla has also been selected as an astronaut for India’s upcoming Gaganyaan mission.
  • Former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson will command the Ax-4 mission, with Shukla serving as the pilot, alongside European Space Agency astronauts Sławosz Uznanski-Wisniewski and Tibor Kapu.
  • Axiom Mission 1 in April 2022 was the first private astronaut mission to the ISS, followed by Axiom Mission 2 in May 2023 and Axiom Mission 3 in January 2024.

5.India to Launch Affordable Indigenous AI Model

On 30th January 2025, Union Minister announced that India is set to introduce its own secure and affordable indigenous Artificial Intelligence (AI) model.

  • Affordable AI Model:The new AI model will be priced at less than 100 rupees per hour, benefiting from a 40% government subsidy, making it far cheaper than global models, which cost 2.5 to 3 dollars per hour.
  • Citizen-Centric Applications:The AI will feature 18 citizen-centric applications covering sectors such as agriculture, learning disabilities, and climate change.
  • India’s Global AI Standing:Minister emphasized that this initiative is a crucial step for India, positioning the country as a reliable global leader in ethical AI solutions.
  • Customization for India:The AI model will be tailored to the Indian context, incorporating Indian languages, with a focus on developing AI solutions that meet local needs.
  • Development Progress:Researchers, developers, and coders are currently working on multiple foundational AI models, and the AI system is expected to be ready within six months.
  • Privacy Concerns Addressed:In response to privacy concerns regarding DeepSeek, the AI model will be hosted on Indian servers after security protocol checks, ensuring the safety of user data.

6.Budget Session Begins with President’s Address

On 31st January 2025, the Budget session of Parliament began with President Droupadi Murmu’s address, outlining the government’s schemes and objectives, with a focus on middle-class housing.

  • President’s Speech:President Murmu emphasized the government’s commitment to fulfilling the middle class’s dream of owning a house.
  • Economic Survey Presentation:Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Economic Survey, which assesses the economy’s performance, prepared by Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran.
